Clips for Metz “The Imaginary Signifier”

Uncategorized

Look forward to our group presentation on Metz’s “the Imaginary Signifier” tonight.

I find another clip could help us understanding Metz’s theory about “fetishism” in the cinema. That is a clip from the Cinema Paradiso, that Toto filmed the woman he loves behind the bars. Although he feels closer to the woman in the camera’s eye, all he captures is the image of the woman, which supplements the woman’s presence but in doing it also signifies the woman’s absence.  Moreover, Toto’s sight is hindered by the bars, creating “suspense”, which “gambles on the excitation of desire and its non-fulfillment”(CV 32).
